Mr. Anthony Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection if he will set out in the Official Report the names of the members of the Consumer Council, the remuneration they have received by way of salary, fees or expenses from public funds what other public offices they hold and the date of expiry of their appointments.

Mr. John Fraser,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 27th February 1978; Vol. 945, c. 25–6] gave the following additional name:

to the Price Commission with a view to refusing further increases in the retail prices of the goods as supplied by this firm, in the interests of controlling inflation.

Mr. Maclennan

The Price Commission is responsible for ensuring that firms' profit levels conform with the Price Code; my right hon. Friend has no power to refer matters concerning individual companies to the Commission An investigation under the Price Commission Act 1977 into price increases notified by Southalls (Birmingham) Limited is now in progress. This company is part of the Smith and Nephew Group and the Commission is due to submit its report to my right hon. Friend by 22nd April 1978.
