HC Deb 03 April 1978 vol 947 cc29-30W
Mr. Patrick Jenkin

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he is satisfied that there is no overlap in the role and activities of the Health Advisory Service and the National Development Group on Services for the Mentally Handicapped, respectively, in relation to long-stay hospitals for the mentally handicapped.

Mr. Ennals

Yes. The Health Advisory Service has no responsibility in relation to mental handicap services in England, though it retains such responsibilities in Wales. In England, advice on national mental handicap policies is given to me by the National Development Group for the Mentally Handicapped, and advice on the planning and operation of local mental handicap services is available to health and social services authorities on request from the Development Team for the Mentally Handicapped.
