HC Deb 26 October 1977 vol 936 c858W
Mr. Stephen Ross

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether, in view of the numbers of zebra skins being imported, to the detriment of the species, he will now control their import.

Mr. Marks:

On the advice of the Scientific Authority for Animals, we have recently made a formal proposal that all species of zebra should be added to the Appendices to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. If this proposal is accepted by the other parties to the convention, we intend to impose the appropriate controls under the Endangered Species (Import and Export) Act 1976 on the import and export of zebras and their readily recognisable parts and derivatives.
