HC Deb 26 October 1977 vol 936 cc792-3W
Mr. Shersby

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will make a further statement concerning the study made by his Department of the difficulties being experienced by British exporters in obtaining product liability insurance for their exports to the United States of America.

Mr. Meacher:

The impression gained from the rather thin response to my Department's request for information is that the difficulties are of cost rather than availability of cover: clearly this reflects the uncertainties and high awards in product liability suits in the United States of America. However, my Department plans discussions in the insurance industry to explore whether any improvements in the situation are feasible.
