HC Deb 26 October 1977 vol 936 c778W
Mr. Grocott

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department to what percentage of the prisoners in Parkhurst drugs are at present being administered; and how many of these are being given more than one kind of drug per day.

Mr. John:

On a typical day drugs prescribed by a medical practitioner were administered to 121 prisoners in Parkhurst, or 29 per cent. of the prison's population, in the following circumstances:

committed acts of violence against members of the public.

Mr. John:

316 prisoners escaped from prisons and remand centres in England and Wales in 1976 of whom 252 absconded from open prisons. Of the escapers who have since been recaptured, one has been reported to have been subsequently convicted of an offence involving violence committed while unlawfully at large.
