HC Deb 26 October 1977 vol 936 cc658-9W
Mr. Jay

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the estimated total revenue in the present financial year of all levies and import duties on food and drink imposed in consequence of the Treaty of Accession to the EEC; how much of this revenue is payable into the EEC budget; and how much is offset by monetary compensatory amounts.

Mr. Joel Barnett:

Revenue from agricultural levies in the financial year 1977–78 is estimated at £135 million. An estimate of revenue from import duties on food and drink separate from the estimate of revenue from all import duties is not available. United Kingdom contributions to the Community budget during this period are governed by the transitional arrangements laid down in the Treaty of Accession; revenue from levies and customs duties does not therefore affect the level of our contributions. Payments of monetary compensatory amounts to the United Kingdom in the current financial year are estimated at £95 million; additional payments, from which the United Kingdom will benefit, will be made to other member States in respect of monetary compensatory amounts on their trade with the United Kingdom.
