HC Deb 26 October 1977 vol 936 cc713-5W
Mr. Farr

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the number of hospital doctors needed to bring their number up to the national average in: (a) the Leicestershire area and (b) the Trent Region.

Mr. Moyle:

At 30th September 1976 an additional 587 whole-time equivalent hospital doctors would have been required in the Trent Region to bring their number up to the average for England. Statistics for areas are not held centrally, so that the corresponding calculation cannot be done for Leicestershire.

NOTES

(1) All NHS staff are shown because, since 1975, it has not been possible to apportion the time of staff who provide common services (e.g. administrative and clerical, ancillary, maintenance and works staff) between that spent in hospitals and in community services. Family practitioner services contractors and agency staff are excluded. The figures for England are provisional.

(2) Permanent paid and honorary hospital medical and dental staff, excluding general practitioners in part-time clinical assistant and hospital practitioner posts.

(3) Information on qualified hospital nurses and midwives is not yet available nationally for 30th September 1976. However, provisional figures for all hospital nursing and midwifery staff (i.e. including trainees and unqualified staff) are available and have been shown. Nursing cadets are included but agency staff excluded.
