HC Deb 26 October 1977 vol 936 c721W
Mr. Lomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement of his policy in matters of making regional health authorities and area health authorities responsible to the electorate.

Mr. Moyle

The Government have already—by increasing to one-third the proportion of health authority members drawn from local government, and by strengthening community health councils —taken important steps towards making health authorities more responsive to the communities they serve.

Mr. Spearing

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what arrangements he is making, pursuant to the; policy of Her Majesty's Government to provide full information to the public, for publication of the annual accounts of regional and area health authorities.

Mr. Moyle

The summarised accounts of health authorities have been published annually as a White Paper ever since 1948–49. The accounts of individual authorities are supplied to their members and, in the case of area health authorities, to community health councils, and are adopted at Authority meetings open to the public and Press for whom copies are available.
