HC Deb 26 October 1977 vol 936 cc826-7W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether he is aware that up to 25th July and for the previous six months over 1,000 cases of complaints were made by Members of Parliament against the Swansea Driving and Vehicle Licensing Centre concerning maladministration, neglect and failure to properly carry out its duties; and whether he will give a breakdown of these 1,000 cases, showing what were the major complaints and what numbers of complaints have been made since this date.

Mr. Horam:

I would refer my hon. Friend to my answer of 21st June and to my subsequent letters to him of 25th July and 24th August.

Mr. Arthur

Lewis asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether he will publish in the Official Report the correspondence he has had with the hon. Member for Newham, North-West in which he has dealt with complaints concerning why it takes the Swansea Driving and Vehicle Licence Centre three months to reregister cars and vehicles, why letters are sent out asking for renewal of driving licences within 14 days when these are not dispatched in time to allow a 14-day return, and on other matters concerning the alleged negligence and maladministration of this Department.

Mr. William Rodgers:

No.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Transport why he is unable to give a breakdown into categories of complaints of the 15,000 letters and telephone calls at Swansea Driving Licence department concerning its negligence, maladministration and neglect; and whether he will give the number of complaints as made for any stated reason or reasons.

Mr. Horam:

I would refer my hon. Friend to my letter of 25th July, in which I explained that no separate record is kept of complaints as distinct from inquiries about driver and vehicle licensing matters.
