asked the Minister of Overseas Development why aid to the Bolivian mining industry was withheld.

The Government's decision not to proceed with the project for assistance to the Bolivian mining industry was taken in the light of the human rights position of miners in Bolivia, and the many representations I received.

Mr. Newens

asked the Minister of Overseas Development upon what criteria the provision of various forms of aid to Bolivia through her Department is based.

Our aid to Bolivia is based on the same criteria as that for other developing countries: assistance to the country's economic and social development, as described in the White Paper Cmnd. 6270 on "The Changing Emphasis in British Aid Policies", in the interests of the poorest people.
