asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the current level of pension of a lieutenant-commander RN who retired on 1st January 1974 having served for 30 years; and what is the current level of pension which would be paid to a lieutenant-commander retiring on 1st January 1978 having served for 34 years.

Mr. Duffy

A lieutenant-commander retired on 1st January 1974 at age 51 having served for 30 years from the age of 21, received a pension of £1,819 a year and a tax-free terminal grant of £5,457. As a consequence of pensions increases granted from age 55, the pension on 1st January 1978 would be £3,794 a year. A lieutenant-commander retiring on 1st January 1978 aged 55 with 34 years' reckonable service would receive a pension of £3,210 per year and a tax-free terminal grant of £9,630. After the pension increase due on 1st April 1978 the pension would be £3,604 a year.
