HC Deb 29 November 1977 vol 940 c189W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his estimate, at 1977 prices, of the cost of an average mile of motorway and dual carriageway construction, respectively.

Mr. McElhone

A meaningful average cannot be obtained. Construction costs vary widely, depending on the terrain and the nature of the scheme.

Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his estimate at current prices of creating a motorway between Glasgow and Carlisle on the line of the present A74/M74.

Mr. McElhone

No recent estimate is available. In 1976 it was considered that the conversion of the A74 to motorway standard would cost well over £100 million.

Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what is his estimate at current prices of making the A75 a full dual carriageway between Stranraer and Dumfries;

(2) what is his estimate at current prices of making the A77 from Ayr to Stranraer a full dual carriageway with bypasses round both Maybole and Girvan.

Mr. McElhone

No estimate can be provided for these works as there are at present no plans for undertaking them.

Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his estimate of the cost involved in constructing bypasses on the A77 serving Maybole and Girvan.

Mr. McElhone

Probably about £3 million and £2 million respectively.
