Mr. Litterick

asked the Secretary of of State for Defence how many men and women voluntarily or involuntarily terminated their service in the Armed Forces during each of the last three complete years for which figures are available; and what level of labour turnover this represents for each Service.

The information is as follows:

enter the Armed Forces under the age of 17½ have the right of free discharge within six months of entry; none is therefore refused release. The total entry of young Service men under the age of 17½ in the financial year 1974–75, 1975–76 and 1976–77 and the numbers who opted to leave under the free discharge category are as follows:

(2) how many Service men and women have been released from service in the Armed Forces on compassionate grounds during each of the last three complete years for which figures are available.
