HC Deb 29 November 1977 vol 940 c123W
Mr. Stephen Ross

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will name the institutions normally used for children detained under Section 53 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933.

Mr. John

Children and young persons ordered to be detained under Section 53 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933 may be held wherever the Secretary of State directs, but for the younger age group allocation is usually to a local authority community home or a youth treatment centre, while older detainees are likely to go to a borstal or a young prisoner centre; occasionally a hospital placement is necessary. Those sentenced to longer periods of detention are likely to be moved to a different type of establishment as they mature.
