Mr. Silvester

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) how many abattoirs in England and Wales meet EEC standards; and if he will list them;

(2) how much spare capacity there is at abattoirs which meet EEC standards.

Mr. Bishop

51 abattoirs in England and Wales are currently approved to export fresh meat to other EEC countries. These slaughterhouses serve the domestic as well as the export market. I cannot say to what extent there is currently spare capacity.
