§ Mr. Brothertonasked the Minister of Overseas Development for what purpose her Department is making a grant of £1,925,000 to the World University Service; what sum was made available in 1976–77; and what steps are taken to monitor its expenditure.
§ Mrs. HartAccountable grants are made to the World University Service (United Kingdom) for training programmes for refugee students from Chile, Vietnam, Kampuchea, Uganda and Ethiopia, and for Rhodesian African students at the University of Rhodesia. The outturn for the current year is now expected to be £2,360,000—not £1,952,000 as stated in my reply to the hon. Member for Wallasey (Mrs. Chalker) on 10th November—because of additional awards to Rhodesian Africans and Ugandans and the extension of awards to Ethiopians. The figure for 1976–77 was £1,420,000.822W My Department is represented on the selection committee, which includes senior academics. Awards are made on the basis of applicants' financial need and academic qualifications and of the prospects of eventual benefit to their home countries. The schemes are regularly reviewed by my Department.
