Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of persons now attending training opportunities schemes is women taking training in typing and shorthand; and what has been the cost of training these women in the latest 12 months for which figures are available.

Mr. Golding

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that about 19 per cent. of persons currently attending TOPs courses are women taking training in shorthand and typing. The cost of training women in these skills in the academic year ended September 1977 was approximately £32 million.
