HC Deb 24 November 1977 vol 939 c903W
21. Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what recent discussions he has had with broadcasting authorities about programmes critical of the Royal Ulster Constabulary; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Mason

I have had no discussion with broadcasting authorities about recent programmes critical of the Royal Ulster Constabulary. I have, however, written to the Chairman of the Independent Broadcasting Authority about a programme made by Thames Television which purported to deal with allegations against the RUC. I have expressed very strongly the view to the Chairman of the Independent Broadcasting Authority that the transmission of such a programme was irresponsible and insensitive. That remains my view.

Mr. O'Halloran

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he has initiated any investigations in the light of the allegations published in Time Out magazine 4th–10th November 1977 concerning police brutality.

Mr. Mason

I would refer to the answer given earlier today to the hon. Member for Haltemprice (Mr. Wall) about similar allegations in a television film.
