asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many vacant married quarters exist for the Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force, respectively, at the latest date; and what are the comparable figures for each of the last four years.

The number of married quarters in the United Kingdom that were vacant on 15th July 1977 were:

Royal Navy 1,900
Army 8,000
Royal Air Force 5,400

Figures for the previous four years are:

for Royal Navy ships since 1973 have been postponed or cancelled.

No contracts have been deferred or cancelled since 1973. In addition to the details for the period since March 1974 given in my reply to the hon. Member for Harrogate (Mr. Banks) in November last year—[Vol. 919, c.363–4.]—there have been the following delays from the planned dates in placing contracts since 1973:
