HL Deb 24 November 1977 vol 387 c1080WA
Lord HOUGHTON of SOWERBY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What amount of horsemeat, in weight or in the number of carcases, is being exported to EEC countries from slaughterings at the four licensed slaughterhouses (Bristol, Crawley, Huddersfield and Norwich), and at what rate these exports are rising.

Lord STRABOLGI

The four slaughterhouses referred to are the only ones in the United Kingdom approved to slaughter horses, the meat of which is intended for intra-Community trade. Exports of horsemeat from the United Kingdom to EEC countries have been as follows:

January-September Tonnes Index
1975 999 100
1976 2,868 287
1977 4,216 422

These figures may include some reexports.
