HC Deb 23 November 1977 vol 939 cc741-2W
Mr. Aitken

asked the Secretary of State of Employment how many school leavers in the Thanet area are still unemployed; and what further efforts are being made to find employment for them.

Mr. Golding

On 13th October, the latest date for which figures are available, there were 101 school leavers under 18 unemployed in the Thanet area covered by the Margate, Ramsgate and Sandwich Careers Offices. The Careers Service and Employment Services Agency will continue to do its utmost to place these young people in employment. They are being aided in this by the Government's programme of special measures. So far in the Thanet area 10 projects have been approved under the job creation scheme providing 24 jobs of which about half have been taken up by young people under 18; 10 schemes have been approved under the work experience programme with a further 24 young people participating; and the employment of 15 young people has been assisted under the youth employment subsidy scheme. Unemployed young people, particularly school leavers, will benefit in the Thanet area, as elsewhere, from the introduction of the new youth opportunities programme which will be fully operational by September 1978.
