Mr. Michael Latham

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will reproduce in the Official Report, and bring up to date, the table regarding the progress of structure plans set out by his Department on page 63 of volume 2 of the Eighth Report from the Expenditure Committee, Session 1976–77, on planning procedures.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether, pursuant to the statement by his Department to the Environment Sub-Committee of the Expenditure Committee on 23rd June 1976, Evidence, Volume 2, that it anticipated that 30 structure plans would be submitted to him in 1977, he will list the plans which have actually been submitted to him in 1977, and also the date of the examination in public; and what were the reasons for the shortfall.

The county planning authority is responsible for the preparation of a structure plan. Records are not maintained centrally of progress before submission, and it is not possible to say which phase of the preparatory work took longer than had been forecast in the other cases.

The Peak District National Park and Oxfordshire structure plans. The examinations in public started on 22nd February 1977 and 1st May 1977 respectively. The county planning authority is responsible for the preparation of a structure plan. Records are not maintained centrally of progress before submission, and it is not possible to say which phase of the preparatory work took longer than had been forecast in the other cases.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he remains of the opinion, expressed by the hon. Member for Greenwich (Mr. Barnett) in answer to the hon. Member for Melton on 24th January 1977, that most of the outstanding structure plans would be submitted to him before April 1978.

On the basis of forecasts from the county planning authorities, about a third of the plans outstanding at 24th January 1977 can be expected before April 1978.
