HC Deb 23 November 1977 vol 939 cc774-5W
Mr. Richard Page

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is the annual wastage in employment over the past four years for British Railways; and what this represents as a percentage of the total number of employees.

Mr. William Rodgers

The net changes in personnel employed on the railways for the four years 1st January 1973 to 1st January 1977 were as follows:

Change in manpower
Numbers Percentage of total
1st January 1973 to 1st January 1974 -5,761 -2.9
1st January 1974 to 1st January 1975 +4,017 +2.1
1st January 1975 to 1st January 1976 -4,960 -2.5
1st January 1976 to 1st January 1977 -7,236 -3.8

Annual wastage rates vary considerably between grades, and it is not the Board's practice to publish them.
