HC Deb 23 November 1977 vol 939 cc791-2W
70. Mr. Fry

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment, in view of the many instances of excessive spending of ratepayers' money, how many audits of local authority accounts have been completed by the District Audit Service beginning with the financial year 1973–74 and up to and including the year 1975–76; and how many statutory reports have been made in respect of these accounts and for which local authorities.

Mr. Guy Barnett

The number of audits completed and statutory reports made by the District Audit Service are as follows:

1973–74 1,353 and 447
1974–75 399 and 360
1975–76 297 and 175
The reports cover a wide range of subjects; by no means all of them are concerned with excessive expenditure by local authorities.

Details of the authorities to whom reports have been made cannot be provided without a disproportionate expenditure of time and resources.
