HC Deb 16 November 1977 vol 939 c241W
Mr. Kilfedder

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will make representations to the insurance companies about motor insurance business in Northern Ireland with a view to the setting up of an insurance consortium for the provision of suitable and adequate insurance cover in those areas such as motor car insurance, where the law makes insurance compulsory and from which a number of insurance companies have been withdrawing underwriting.

Mr. Concannon

Eighty insurance companies are authorised to carry out motor insurance in Northern Ireland and some other companies authorised in Great Britain also provide motor insurance for Northern Ireland drivers through local insurance brokers. In the last few months two insurance companies have withdrawn from the motor insurance market in Northern Ireland, but there remain adequate motor insurance facilities for Northern Ireland motorists.
