HC Deb 16 November 1977 vol 939 cc258-9W
Mr. Speed

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what recent discussions he has had with Kent County Council about motorway construction and trunk road improvements in Kent.

Mr. Horam

None. However, I met a deputation from Kent County Council in July to discuss issues connected with the Dartford Tunnel. In addition, the Department consults the county council in the normal way at the appropriate stages of development of all motorway and trunk road schemes in Kent.

Mr. Speed

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what priority he is giving to improvements in rail and roads in Kent, in the light of the abandonment of the Channel Tunnel project.

Mr. Horam

The White Paper on transport policy emphasised that priority would be given in road building to those routes to the major ports that carry a high proportion of industrial traffic. A number of roads in Kent in this category have been improved or are under construction.

Priority for rail improvements is a matter for the British Railways Board.
