HC Deb 16 November 1977 vol 939 cc283-5W
Mr. Lomas

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) what is the average weekly income per household in Scotland;

(2) what is the average weekly income per household in Wales;

(3) what is the average weekly income per household in the Yorkshire and Humberside Region.

job creation scheme with which to employ his son.

Mr. Golding

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that Mr. Wright is running a scheme approved by the Commission under the work experience programme. The programme is open to all unemployed young people aged under 19. It is possible for the child of an owner of a small business which is running a scheme to be recruited to that scheme, provided that the child is unemployed and is considered suitable for the scheme by the careers service.

Mr. Raison

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list the job creation programme schemes in Buckinghamshire.

Mr. Golding

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that projects approved under the job creation programme in Buckinghamshire are as follows:

Mr. Golding

The most recent figures available are from the Family Expenditure Survey for 1976. It is estimated that average weekly gross household income in 1976 was £80.30 in Scotland, £72.40 in Wales and £78.20 in Yorkshire and Humberside. These figures are given to the nearest l0p. They are subject to sampling error, and this is likely to be larger for Wales, the smallest of the three regions.

Mr. Lomas

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the average wage for all workers in 1965 and what it is at present; and what it would have to be to have maintained the same purchasing power.

Mr. Golding

Statistics of average earnings of all workers are available only in index form, not as cash amounts. Between August 1965 and August 1977 the monthly index (older series) of average earnings increased by 288 per cent. This index covers production industries and certain service industries only, but all categories of employees in these industries—full-time nad part-time, non-manual and manual, all age-groups—in Great Britain. It relates to gross earnings before income tax and national insurance payments, dependent on the worker's circumstances, are deducted. Their purchasing power is dependent on the impact of income tax and national insurance as well as the prices of goods and services.
