Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what was the annual output in tons of coal produced per employee, as distinct from the output per manshift, in the coal mining industry in the United Kingdom for each of the years 1970, 1972, 1974 and 1976; if he will express these figures as a percentage of the 1970 figure in each instance; and what were the comparable figures for coal mining in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The information requested is as follows:

since the nationalisation of the coal industry, the amount of public expenditure at prices current for each year in favour of the National Coal Board for (a) write-off of debt, (b) subsidies to meet losses on current or capital account, (c) grants for stocking of coal, coke or anthracite, and (d) any other sums by way of subsidy paid or credited from public funds to the industry; and what is the cumulative total in each case.
