HC Deb 16 November 1977 vol 939 cc276-7W
Sir A. Meyer

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is the estimated cost per mile of completing the dual tracking of the A55 road from the Welsh border to Bangor; how much of this cost is represented by the Colcon section; and how the cost compares with the construction of the M4 in Wales at constant prices.

Mr. Barry Jones

The estimated final cost at current prices of the lengths of M4 motorway at present under construction or recently completed is £139 million, which represents an overall average cost of £3.9 million per mile. Comparative figures for the future dualling of lengths of the A55 trunk road between the Welsh border and Bangor are about £180 million and approximately £3.7 million per mile. The Colcon section is likely to cost about £120 million, equivalent to £6.7 million per mile.
