HC Deb 15 November 1977 vol 939 cc139-40W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the estimate of the number of 15-year-old children in the United Kingdom who are tuberculin-positive.

Mr. Moyle

No reliable estimates are available of the number of 15-year-old tuberculin-positive children.

However, in 1975, the latest year for which figures are available, 649,708 people in England and Wales were tested under the schoolchildren's and students' scheme, of whom the vast majority were in the 11 to 13-year-old group. 50,437 were found to be positive, and 554,912 were vaccinated, which will have led to their becoming positive also.
