HC Deb 15 November 1977 vol 939 cc165-6W
Mr. Nelson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many remands in custody after conviction were made in 1976 to obtain psychiatric reports, other medical reports and social inquiry reports.

Mr. John

Information is not readily available in the form requested. However, it is estimated that of the people remanded in custody in 1976, about 11,500 were remanded by magistrates' courts after conviction for reports to be compiled under Section 14(3) and Section 26 of the Magistrates' Court Act 1952; this figure covers psychiatric, medical and social inquiry reports. A corresponding estimate is not readily available for similar remands for reports by the Crown court.

Also it is known that in 1976 the prison medical services compiled 11,057 reports on the mental health and 308 reports on the state of health only of people remanded in custody. These reports were on people remanded both before and after conviction. Corresponding information relating to social inquiry reports is not available.
