Mr. Latham

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the total yield to the Exchequer to date from development land tax; what is the total administrative cost of operating the tax, including both the valuation office and the revenue itself; and what is the current staffing establishment at the Development Land Tax Office in Middlesbrough.

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 10th Nov. 1977; Vol. 938, c. 189], circulated the following answer:

The total yield to the Exchequer to date from development land tax is £5.4 million. In addition it is estimated that the benefit to date to acquiring authorities from the net of tax arrangements is approximately £8.3 million.

The estimated annual cost of the development land tax office, and of connected work within valuation offices, is £1,550,000 at current prices. The current staffing establishment at the development land tax office is 154.
