Mr. Dodsworth

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how much work is done to prevent pirate radio stations causing interference on the BBC radio sound waves; and what is the level of success in investigating and preventing such illegal broadcasts.

Mr. John

No separate records are kept of the number of cases of interference caused to BBC sound broadcasts by illicit broadcasting transmitters. Since 1st January 1977 there have been 29 convictions for illicit broadcasting activities.

Mr. Dodsworth

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how much grant in aid is paid to the Post Office for the purposes of their investigating service into interference with BBC radio sound waves.

Mr. John

The Post Office is paid the full cost of investigating complaints of interference to sound radio broadcasts. This was £539,000 in the financial year 1976–77.
