HC Deb 14 November 1977 vol 939 cc42-3W
Mr. Wall

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what action he is taking, at least, to maintain the agreed British quotas of cod in Norwegian waters.

Mr. Strang

The Community's 1977 quota for cod in the Norwegian Arctic zone was exhausted on 5th November, when fishing ceased. United Kingdom fishermen had not taken their full share of the Community quota for the period from 1st September in accordance with the division agreed by the Council of Ministers on 27th September. The Government are pressing the other member States concerned both directly and through the Commission for a full account of their catch in the period concerned.

Fishing for cod in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea may continue under the standstill arrangement, which limits the catch to the amount taken in 1976.
