HC Deb 11 November 1977 vol 938 cc297-9W
Mrs. Chalker

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the total sum granted to voluntary organisations in each of the years 1973–74, 1974–75, 1975–76, 1976–77; what is the size of the grants budgeted for 1977–78, 1978–79 and 1979–80: and if he will detail these.

Mr. John Grant:

The services for which the Department of Employment and the Manpower Services Commission make grants to voluntary bodies and the expenditure or estimated expenditure from 1973–74 to 1979–80 are as follows :

Kingdom at the latest count; how many of them were heads of household; and what were the comparable figures in 1972 and 1967.

Mr. Golding:

Figures for those in full-time employment are available only for 1972 and 1976. Between June in each of these years the numbers fell from 18,594,000 to 18,179,000; the numbers in

Full-time (thousands) Part-time (thousands)
Males Females Males Females
June 1972 12,994 5,600 613 2,912
June 1976 12,673 5,506 714 3,646

Estimates from the 1975 EEC Labour Force survey suggest that approximately 80 per cent. of male employees and 15 per cent. of female employees were heads of households. The information for earlier years is more limited but other survey sources suggest that these proportions are likely to be fairly stable.
