HC Deb 10 November 1977 vol 938 c190W
Mr. Wyn Roberts

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list loans from abroad to Her Majesty's Government and nationalised industries since 1st March 1974 together with repayments in whole or in part.

Mr. Robert Sheldon:

Tables have already been placed in the House of Commons Library giving for each month up to the end of September 1976 the names of all borrowers, the amount borrowed, and the sterling equivalent at the rates prevailing when the loans were drawn down. I am arranging for this list to be updated.

Since 1st March 1974, the borrowing by Her Majesty's Government and the public sector has been as follows:

$billion (*)
Her Majesty's Government 8.6
By Public Sector under the exchange cover scheme 7.3
By Public Sector not under the exchange cover scheme 1.6
Total 17.5

I am also arranging for a list to be made available in the House of Commons Library of all repayments and part-repayments made since 1st March 1974. The totals are as follows:

$billion (*)
Repayments of loans taken out before 1/3/74 0.5
Repayment of loans taken out after 1/3/74 0.0 (**)
Repayment of long-term debts 0.4
Total 0.9
(* at current exchange rates) (** less than 0.05)
