Mrs. Bain

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will list in the Official Reportthe real value of salaries earned by (a) junior lecturers, (b) senior lecturers and (c) professors in British universities over each of the last seven years, taking 1970 as base.

Mr. Oakes:

Salary scales for non-clinical academic staff in universities in the United Kingdom cover (a) lecturers, (b) senior lecturers or readers and (c) professors. The following table shows, for selected comparable points on these scales in the past seven years, the actual rates paid at 1st October—which is the normal date for reviewing salary scales—together with the values at October 1970 prices.
