HC Deb 26 May 1977 vol 932 c620W
Mr. Roderick

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what are the implications for Wales of the Government's proposals to encourage the growth of tourism in fragile districts within the Welsh development area.

Mr. John Morris

The Wales Tourist Board encourages tourist development in areas where it can strengthen the local economy. In recent months the Board has been surveying the possibilities for new developments in fragile areas which could absorb more visitors without damage to their environment and where there is a potential to promote features with tourist appeal. I am now inviting the chairman of the Board to put forward two or three development schemes in these areas on a scale commensurate with local needs which would attract local support including independent finance. There will be consultation with the communities involved. I shall ask the Board to give priority to those schemes, if approved, within the existing budget for assistance to tourism projects.
