HL Deb 26 May 1977 vol 383 c1553WA
Lord CHELWOOD

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are aware of the grave threats to United Kingdom stocks of salmon and sea trout from indiscriminate netting at sea; and what account has been taken during negotiations to establish a European Community system for the conservation and management of fishery resources of the need to embody adequate measures to restrict netting and otherwise conserve the stocks of these fish.

Lord STRABOLGI

British fishing vessels are prohibited from fishing for salmon beyond baselines and I am not aware of any fishing for salmon by other countries within the 200 mile British fishery limit. Her Majesty's Government would not hesitate to press for Community action throughout the waters of Community Member States if such action appeared to be necessary in order to safeguard the stocks of salmon and trout.
