HC Deb 24 May 1977 vol 932 c433W
Mr. Hordern

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many people are liable to tax on earnings of less than £1,500, less than £2,000 and less than £3,000, respectively.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

I regret that information about the number of people liable to tax by range of earnings is not available. However, by range of total net income, the numbers are as follows:

ESTIMATED NUMBER OF TAXPAYERS FOR 1977–78
Total net income: (millions)
less than£1,500 1.8
less than£2,000 3.7
less than£3,000 8.1

A married couple is counted as one taxpayer.

Total net income is defined in Inland Revenue Statistics 1976 at page 35.
