asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the cumulative total of applications for payment of the Temporary Employment Subsidy to date and the total number of workers involved.

My Lords, as at 6th May 1977, 4,556 applications in respect of 309,729 workers had been received, of which 3,588 applications covering 245,042 workers had been approved.

asked Her Majesty's Government:

  1. (i) how much money has been paid out in Temporary Employment Subsidy in the last six months for which figures are available and between how many companies has the money been divided;
  2. (ii) whether Temporary Employment Subsidy has been allowed in respect of companies in which the Government hold a substantial stake;
  3. (iii) what percentages of application forms received for Temporary Employment Subsidy are investigated to check whether the responses are accurate;
  4. (iv) how many subsidies have subsequently been withdrawn as a result of such investigations.

My Lords, I regret that precise information in the form requested is not available:

  1. (i) Just under £67 million was paid in Temporary Employment Subsidy (TES) Scheme during the six months ending on 31st March 1977. It is estimated that this amount was paid out in respect of 2,800 applications for TES; some companies may have made more than one application in respect of different redundancy groups.
  2. (ii) TES has been approved for one company in which the Government hold a substantial stake.

  5. (iv) As at 13th May 1977, 229 applications had been rejected.
