§ Mr. OakesThe greatest improvement in the teaching of methematics in schools would come from the employment of more suitably qualified teachers. The special measures of teacher re-training announced in the Budget speech will contribute to this. My right hon. Friend is 127W consulting the interests concerned on the proposal that prospective entrants to teacher training should have to demonstrate a minimum level of competence in mathematics and English.
