§ Miss Margaret Jackson5,195 people were registered by the Department of Employment in March 1977 as seeking posts in schools in England and Wales. This represents a drop of 1,992–27.7 per cent.—from the number registered in September 1976. In January 1977 there were 2,866 new appointments to teaching in maintained nursery, primary and secondary schools from the July 1976 output from teacher training. This compares with 2,318 in January 1976, an increase of 23.6 per cent.
