HC Deb 11 May 1977 vol 931 c509W
Mr. Gwynfor Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many men were employed in the steel industry in 1967 in England, Scotland and Wales, respectively; and how many he estimates will be employed in 1982.

Mr. Golding

The number of males employed in the steel industry in June 1967 in England, Scotland and Wales was 203,800, 30,100 and 70,400, respectively.

Rationalisation, improved technology and higher productivity have reduced the number of workers in the industry, and further reductions are likely. It is not, however, possible to forecast with any degree of certainty how many workers will be employed in the industry in 1982.
