HL Deb 11 May 1977 vol 383 cc361-2WA
Lord HYLTON

asked Her Majesty's Government:

When the review of the Radioactive Substances Act 1960 was begun; when it will be completed and published and whether this will be before any decision is reached on the proposals to expand Windscale; by whom the review is being conducted and whether evidence has been or will be called for from private individuals and voluntary bodies.

Baroness BIRK

An expert group, which started work in January last year, is currently reviewing the White PaperThe Control of Radioactive Waste (Cmnd. 884) in the light of the changes which have taken place since the White Paper was published in 1959. The group expect to finish their work by the end of the year; their findings will then be made public, and there will be opportunity for interested persons and organisations to make representations about them; but it is unlikely that the findings will be available before the conclusion of the Windscale inquiry.

House adjourned at twenty-nine minutes past eight o'clock.
