Mr. Baker

asked the Prime Minister what is the total employment of the Government Statistical Service; and what is his estimate of numbers of civil servants outside the Statistical Service proper who are fully employed in statistical work and of the numbers of those employed largely but not wholly in such activities.

The Prime Minister

At 1st April 1977 there were 550 professional statisticians in the Government Statistical Service. They are supported by some 5,750 executive and clerical staff, not including typists

in the past three years, stating the subjects of such consultancy and the fees paid in each case.
