§ Mr. Hooleyasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what were the principal conclusions of the Economic Commission for Europe annual session in Geneva in April 1977.
§ Mr. JuddThe Economic Commission for Europe approved at its 32nd Plenary Session in Geneva in April 1977 the Commission's programme of work for 1977–78 and endorsed in principle, subject to review at its 33rd Session in 1978, its long term programme of work for 1978–81. In the light of proposals made by the Executive Secretary on specific areas discussed during the session, it was agreed that next year's plenary should decide whether or not to convene a high level meeting within the framework of the ECE on the protection of the environment.
We continue to regard the ECE as the proper place to follow up the provisions of basket II of the Final Act of the Helsinki Agreement requiring multilateral implementation. It was agreed that the Executive Secretary should report on the progress in this field, if requested to do so, at the review meeting of the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe at Belgrade this autumn.
These conclusions are contained in a resolution adopted by consensus, of which 390W a copy is being placed in the Library of the House of Commons in the usual way
