HC Deb 03 May 1977 vol 931 cc137-8W
Mr. Kenneth Clarke

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what is the average price per ton of coal imported into the United Kingdom from each country from which coal was imported in 1976; and how this compares with the average price per ton of coal mined in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Eadie

Average prices derived from the "Overseas Trade Statistics of the UK," in 1976 were as follows:

£/ton cif
Netherlands 24.91
Federal Republic of Germany 44.64
Irish Republic 18.63
Poland 30.20
North Viet-Nam 30.69
Australia 22.84
U.S.A 39.66
Other countries 33.00
Average, all imports 29.60

The average unit revenue to the National Coal Board from sales of deep-mined coal in 1976 was £17.95/ton. Comparisons between prices may be affected by differences between coal qualities imported from different countries and between the terms of particular contracts.
