HC Deb 03 May 1977 vol 931 cc93-4W
Mr. Hodgson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what statutory powers exist to regulate the sale of exotic wildlife at zoos and wildlife parks.

Dr. Summerskill

The conduct of a business of selling animals as pets at premises of any nature is subject to control under the Pet Animals Act 1951. Under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1973 a licence is required, with certain exceptions, to keep any dangerous wild animals listed in the schedule to the Act. In addition, my right Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment has powers in relation to live animals listed in Schedule 1 to the Endangered Species (Import and Export) Act 1976 which are the subject of an import licence issued under the Act to require that such animals should be kept at specified premises.
