asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the total prison population at the latest available date compared with the certified normal accommodation; and what steps he is taking to reduce overcrowding.

On 28th February there were 36,918 certified normal accommodation places in Prison Service establishments in England and Wales and the total population was 41,577.

With regard to the second part of the Question, I refer my hon. Friend to the answer given earlier today to a Question from my hon. Friend to the Member for Aberdare (Mr. Evans).
